Assata Shakur on Freedom

“Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has gotten their freedom, by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them.”

– Assata Shakur

Here is wisdom.

Shakur’s statement is a more eloquent corollary to the old “those in power will not give up that power unless they are made to feel uncomfortable.”  Appealing to an oppressor’s moral sense is a waste of time because if the oppressor had a moral sense they would not be oppressing people. Only when the oppressors see it as in their best interest to cease oppressing other people’s freedoms will the people win their freedom.
